My family loves to consume bacteria. You heard me right. We try to make sure we get our share of good bacteria in the form of probiotics. These good bacteria help us to digest our food, prevent allergies, boost our immune system, and overall keep our body healthy.
In my opinion, the best and most natural way to do this is through fermented foods. While you can buy supplements, most can not even compare with the amount of good bacteria you get from fermented foods. Fermentation has been around for hundreds of years as a way to preserve a range of foods in many different cultures and has just recently really became popular in the US.
While you can choose many different fermented foods it is important to keep a good mixture going so that you get a diverse range of good bacteria.

We eat a lot of pickles. This summer I decided that if we were going to eat that many I needed to do two things: grow my own and ferment them.
I wanted to grow my own in order to ensure I was getting a high quality cucumber. In this year’s extended dirty dozen list cucumbers made their appearance has being high in pesticides. As for the fermenting – we love probiotics. Probiotics are a major help in gaining healthy gut health.
So, yummy pickles that are good for your body? Win, win!
