Vitamin D: More Than Just Strong Bones

Vitamin D is a pre-hormone that helps to regulate many of the hormones in your body. It is very important to the bodies overall function but often down played in its necessity. Almost everyone can tell you that it “helps build strong bones”  – but it does so much more than that! And now that summer is here there is plenty of it to go around.

What Does Vitamin D Do?

  • Helps the body absorb calcium
  • Needed for muscle movement
  • Keeps up immune system
  • Some studies are now suggesting the adequate  vitamin D levels may protect against colon, prostate, and breast cancer.
  • Vitamin D is extremely necessary for the body to function properly.

What Do You Need?

Vitamin D is majorly looked over by the FDA when it comes to all that it does for the body – often leading to their dose recommendation being on the low end at around 600 IU for adults, 400 for children. However, some more realistic recommendations come in online casinos at around the 1000 – 2000 IU per day range. Going even higher if your sick online casino or pregnant/nursing.

How To Get Yours

The sun is the best source of vitamin D you can get – and it is a free, natural source and at your disposal for many hours of the day. Around 80% of our vitamin D comes from the sun.  The best part is you don't need to be outside long. You can get up to 10,000 IU from the sun in 20 minutes. Just keep in mind that sunscreen is NOT  something you want to put on before hand. Your body cannot absorb the vitamin D with it on.

Something else I have talked about often also makes a good source – Cod liver oil!  Cod liver oil is a whole-food source that provides 1000-2000 IU in a dose. You can also gain many other health benefits from taking it like vitamin A (which helps with absorption  and the benefits of a butter blend if you use Green Pastures FCLO.

Keep in mind with supplements you must be sure you are getting quality ingredients – many are not worth your time or money.  Chances are what you find in your local grocery is vitamin D2, which is synthetic.

You can also have to much vitamin D. With the amount in the blood becomes to high toxicity occurs including vomiting weakness, weight loss, confusion, and damage to the kidneys. By getting your exposure from the sun you eliminate this risk though because the body limits the amount of the vitamin it produces – back to the whole natural process part. 🙂

  3. However … for many people the sunshine is not enough. If thyroid is low,etc. …case in point my sister and mother both live in SE AZ and are both very low so it is still a good idea to get your levels checked.
