Herbal Spotlight: Lavender (And Giveaway Winner!)

When I think of lavender I think of relaxation. After a long day, I will often use a  lavender shower disk to let that wonderful relaxing scent melt away my stress. However, this amazing herb has so much more to offer!

What Is It?

Lavender gets its name from the Latin “lavare” which means “to wash.”It grows as a short shrub with vibrant green shoots. The flowers are typically blue, violet, or lilac and form in close clusters. The oil in the flowers is what give lavender its wonderful scent – which is also the oil that is used to make lavender essential oils which have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Lavender can be used in many ways depending on what you’re intending to treat. Here are some common uses:

For Headaches: When I feel a headache coming I will take some lavender essential oil and rub it on my temples or the back of my neck and it usually does the trick.

For Relaxation: MAM’s Soothing Herbal Bath uses lavender to relax and soothe the body. You can also use lavender in body products like foot scrubs and lotions.

For Acne: You lavender and witch-hazel to reduce inflammation and increase healing of acne breakouts and scars.

For Insect Repellent: You can make an easy insect repellent by infusing dried lavender flowers with white wine vinegar. Simply add the ingredients together and let infuse for two weeks.

For Insomnia and Anxiety: Studies have shown that adding lavender oil to ones nightly routine “had a significant beneficial influence on quality and duration of sleep and improved general mental and physical health without causing any unwanted sedative or other drug-specific effects.” This can be as simple as adding a drop or two to one’s pillow.

  1. WOW!!! I am so excited to have won the give-away!!!!! What a great way to start out the new year :0)
    I use lavender daily in my home. I scent my sheets with it every night so that I have a great sleep and use it regularly in my bath and laundry. I have fibromyalgia and it helps with the anxiety and the aches and pains that go with it.


  2. I have little canvas bags and I like to fill them with dried lavender and soothing herbs and put them inside the top side of my pillow, really helps with insomnia and is really relaxing!
